Chapter Eleven

Breaking away from Mae was harder than I expected the next morning. Exhaustion tangled with need and my desire to revel in our comfortable safe space. Classes dragged on and, in effort to keep up with my reputation, I kept my students for the entire time even on the last day.

"You really are an Ice Queen, El," Delia said as she hopped up to sit on the desk. "One more class to freeze in your wake before summer." In the spirit of spring, the pink streak in her hair replaced the usual blue.

"I'm looking forward to it. With everything that's going on, planning a wedding in two weeks is going to be insane. I mean, we're keeping it simple but the mental preparation alone plus our license, and everything going on with Phee."

"I can't believe your parents took her in. Do they usually do that?"

"Yeah, I mean, on and off. They respite kids in the foster care system all the time but that's usually only for a few days or the weekend. This...I don't know," I said, toying with my engagement ring while we spoke. Delia swatted my hand then pulled it closer to inspect the diamond.

"Your ring is beautiful, Ella. Really."

"I know. I feel like Mae should have one, too. I'm still not sure how this whole lesbian thing works," I said, laughing a little.

"It's what you make it, I'm sure," she said, chuckling.

"I'm going to surprise her with one. When she least expects it."

"I like that idea." Delia swung her legs a bit and grew quiet for a moment when her eyes fell to the faint welts around my wrists. "What happened?" she asked when I tugged my sleeves down.

"Nothing."

"Seriously, what happened to your wrist?" Delia grabbed my arm again and heat rushed my face so harshly that I was pretty sure I'd turned purple.

"Nothing." I tugged my hand back and gripped the desk beside me.

"El," she said, her brows lifting upward with her grin. "You kinky little—"

"Delia! Shhh." I dropped my face into my hands and fought the urge to run away. She laughed at my reaction and rubbed my shoulder. No one had ever said anything to me about something like this and I found myself shrinking under the attention. Mae and I did a lot of kinky things. Things that no one else knew about and, most importantly, didn't know that I liked.

"I'm only dropping it because we're at work but I promise you I'll ask you twenty questions later on," she said, chuckling still.

"Jerk."

"That's me."

"Talk about something else," I said, continuing to cover my face.

"Tell me about Phee."

"She's a good kid and the system has failed her over and over again," I said when the embarrassment faded some.

"Like you. And Jax. And your brother."

"Maybe like Jax but Jed and I had it good in the end."

"You all had it good in the end, El. You and Jed have your adoptive parents. Jax has you and Mae. How many placements did all of you have? Plenty, too.
